If you’re like most wantrepenreurs, you probably have 4 or 5 ideas spewing in your head. Additionally, you probably have 1 or 2 more that pop into your head every month. The validity of these ideas range from idiotic to brilliant. Some may actually be worth pursuing and build a nice healthy passive income for you. Others may actually be breakthrough ideas that let you get rich and join the luxurious life of beach homes and Mediterranean sailing. However, none of them will ever accomplish anything for you if they stay in your head.
So why are you so overprotective of your idea?
Try getting a developer to sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) before you pitch him your idea. Tell an angel investor the same thing. Convince yourself that you need a patent to begin. All you’re doing is giving China the blueprint on how to copy it. The fact of the matter is, unless you’re willing to recklessly pursue your idea to completion, without worrying who hears about it- your idea will never get finished. And finished is better than protected.
When you stop being overprotective of your idea and ask for advice, help, or perspective- you get it. If you worry that your idea is too good to be shared because it’s the “Next FaceBook,” your idea will stay in your head- undeveloped, and you will never know what could have been.
Ideas die from underexposure, not overexposure.
So get out there and start cooking. Contact an artist to draw a blueprint. Call a manufacture to get a quote for prototyping and production. Create a pitch on KickStarter. Finish your eBook and get it on the Kindle. Or build the website and show it to your friends.
Finished products are everything. Ideas are worthless.
